How to get to your Ambleside holiday cottage

Ambleside has excellent road links to the rest of the Lake District and despite its rural location, there are a number of well-serviced public transport routes.

Should you prefer to drive, you will be treated to a scenic journey through the countryside on the way to your holiday accommodation in Ambleside. From the south, take the M6 until junction 36 where you exit for the A591 which will take you through Windermere and on to Ambleside.

If you’re travelling from Scotland, take the M6 down to Penrith where you join the A66 at junction 40. Exit for the A591, passing Helvellyn and Keswick, and this will take you into the town. There is plenty of parking available.

Ambleside doesn’t have a railway station but both Oxenholme and Windermere provide rail links to many major UK cities. From Windermere, you can catch the 599 bus to Ambleside which run every 20 minutes. Journey times last around 15 minutes with an adult single fare priced at £6.

You can enjoy something a little different by hopping on a boat to Ambleside. Purchase a Bus & Boat Ticket (Central Lakes Zone) and you are entitled to unlimited bus travel in the area and one single boat journey between Bowness and Waterhead Pier (close to Ambleside). Tickets are priced at £12.50 for adults and £8.50 for children.
