  1. Pilot a boat through the canals

    You and your soulmate can rent your own boat and after a few instructions, take to the canals and enjoy the sights with no distractions or interruptions. For even more romance, set off at sunset with a picnic and a bottle of fizz.

  2. Go to the movies

    Holding hands or having a cuddle while watching a film is always romantic, but when you add in a hefty dose of Art Deco architecture, the romance factor definitely soars. The Pathe Tuschinski cinema dates from 1921 and has over-the-top decor from the moment you step through the door. In the Grote Zaal or Main Hall, you can even book your own private balcony.

  3. Hofje

    While secluded and beautiful historic courtyards can be found all over Amsterdam, the neighbourhood of de Jordaan has the most. Walk around the streets, keeping an eye out for openings in the walls that lead you into these hidden-away courtyards, perfect for a stolen kiss or two. De Jordaan is also home to a large Saturday morning street market.

  4. Spend an evening sipping mulled wine

    If your romantic break is in the winter and the evenings are dark and cold then cosy up in an atmospheric 'brown bar'. Get comfortable beside a roaring fire and sip a warming glass of Dutch mulled wine. Brown bars get their name from the dark wood panelling that lines their walls and counters. Some are even still lit with candles. You can't get much more romantic than that.

  5. A trip to the Tulip Fields

    While not strictly speaking in Amsterdam and definitely seasonal (April and May), there is something very magical and romantic about miles and miles of colourful tulips laid out before you. If you miss the Tulip Fields, then visit the Floating Flower Market or Bloemenmarkt.
