Less than a mile from Bridgetown on the island's west coast, Carlisle Bay attracts luxury catamarans and yachts with its sparkling blue water and long strip of sandy beach. Brownes Beach offers a quiet spot for catching some rays or chilling under the shady canopy of a bar, while the northern end of the bay is busy with jetskis and other high-octane watersports. Alternatively, go diving by one of the nearby shipwrecks, which provide a home to turtles, octopuses, and other tropical sea life.

Located on the rugged east coast of Barbados, this is a prime spot for surfing thanks to the Atlantic rollers that come crashing in - especially the area known as the Soup Bowl, where international competitions are held. For less active travellers, shallow pools carved out of the coral offer a relaxing place to cool off and sip a rum punch. Meanwhile, Bathsheba village has a laid-back, rustic feel, with traditional fishing still going on. The lush, rocky coastline makes for magical seaside strolls.

With a history dating back to 1625, this town is a great destination. There's a popular beach for tanning and kayaking, a boardwalk for romantic evening saunters, and you can pick up colourful local shirts and shorts in the shops of Chattel Village. After sunset, head First and Second Street for all-night clubs and spicy Caribbean restaurants.
