City Breaks in Bilbao

Bilbao's most famous landmark and attraction is the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenhiem Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Frequently cited as one of the most architecturally significant buildings of the late 20th century, it houses changing exhibitions including large-scale installations.

Despite a reputation for modern, ground-breaking architecture, the city's Medieval Old Town, known as 'The Seven Streets' (Casco Viejo), is a colourful and charming place to wander around. It includes a series of cobbled streets connected via narrow alleyways and is home to the Neo-Classical Plaza Nueva.

The most important fine art museum in Spain outside of Madrid, Bilbao's Museum of Fine Arts features Basque, Spanish, and European art spanning from the medieval to modern era. The museum is found within Dona Casilda Iturrizar Park.

Take the furnicular railway up this dramatic mountain. From the top you will enjoy breath-taking views of the city, including the Guggenheim and the skyscrapers of downtown Bilbao. There's also a swimming pool at the peak.

The Basque version of tapas is as beautiful to look at as it is to eat. Go on a bar crawl during the early evening and taste a different dish in each place. The Old Town, notably Plaza Nueva, is the best place to taste both the city's most traditional and innovative pinxtos.
