Key Information for a Ski Holiday in Charmonix

Key Information for a Ski Holiday in Charmonix

Valleys in Chamonix are hailed for astounding views of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Europe. Looking for the best ideas for a ski week in the town? Know what to expect so you don't leave anything out when planning your trip. Whether you are the leader of a skiers' group or a solo traveller, this directory is for you.

  1. Overview

Chamonix is arguably the greatest ski spot not only in Europe. The epic party scene and brilliant off-piste render it a freeride capital. While it may not be the best for beginners, it is indeed a place for veterans and off-piste. If you want to have successful skiing holidays in Chamonix, choose a resort that matches your preferences. But before you leave home, research the snow conditions. If it's your first time in Chamonix, you will be in for a treat.

  2. Ski resorts and terrain

The magnitude of skiing and snowboarding terrain on and off-piste in Chamonix is sensational. Anticipate a vast network of over 60 lifts (though not interconnected). The majority of the ski surfaces are above 1.2 miles (1900 metres) by altitude. Four major ski resorts offer world-class snow sports in Chamonix Valley. There are 6 small skill hills, not to mention the Aiguille du Midi. The valley at Argentière is an advanced cliff with steep off-piste terrain. The mellowest area is at Balme Tour Vallorcine featuring less advanced trails for intermediate skiers and beginners and some tasty freeride powder. The best place for a beginner to learn is near Brevent. A savoy piste stands 0.64 miles (1049 metres) above sea level and offers two drag lifts plus a carpet for kids.

  3. How to get to Chamonix

Take a direct flight to Geneva, which has connections by train and bus shuttles to Chamonix. You might also want to take a train from Paris and travel via Geneva or St Gervais Les Bains-Le Fayet and arrive the following day. To complete the journey, take a 40-min bus ride to Chamonix. If you are coming from Calais, take Reims-Dijon-Geneva route and follow the informative signposts. Keep in mind that the ski resorts in Chamonix are separate, so you need to take a bus ride between them. Some hotels offer ski lifts back and forth every day.
