With its all-night clubbing and its glitzy bar scene, Split offers high spirited fun from dusk to dawn. And what a location. Many of the best clubs and cafés are situated on the Riva - the cosmopolitan waterfront - and the old town, which grew up out of the remains of a palace built by the Roman emperor Diocletian in the 3rd century AD. Charter a boat at Split marina: other prime nightlife venues like the island of Hvar are only a short trip away.
Near Split, Hvar is Croatia's party island. During the summer, A-list celebrities descend in droves on its beaches, vineyards, restaurants and villages full of picture box architecture. The marinas become very busy during the peak season, but you can dock rental boats at the nearby nature park island of Palmizana, which is equally beautiful but much less crowded.
Sophisticated nightlife is just one of the attractions of Biograd. The capital of Croatia a thousand years ago, it's now a mecca for the international yachting crowd. For a change from elegant clubbing, play a game of doubles at the town's prestigious tennis clubs, or blend with the jetsetters at one of the 70 regattas and other sailing events that take place over the summer, culminating in a boat show in October which is one of the major dates in the Dalmatian coast's social calendar. Oh, and Biograd has some magnificent Venetian-style architecture too.
A short boat trip from the town of Zadar, the bleached alien landscape of this rocky island - dotted with Roman aqueducts, fortifications and salt works - has attracted a large number of filmmakers. It's also home to Zrce beach, a buzzing party spot that hosts a roster of top celebrity DJs.
Only a mile from Dubrovnik's old town, this tiny bay warrants a mention in its own right, as it has become a major destination for people looking for a good time on the Adriatic coast. Charter a ski rental, play volleyball, or just hang out at one of the many beachside restaurants and bars. When you eventually fancy a change of scene, take a boat ride to Hvar or go on a tour of the beach bars of the Lapad peninsula.
