In Hungary's capital, April is party time. As the weather heats up, the city hosts a massive Spring Festival, featuring jazz performances, opera, ballet, and even live circus troupes. If you love classical music, it's a real treat - with world famous performers jetting in to present their talents.
Moving over to the west, Seville's Semana Santa (Holy Week) is an unmissable April event. To celebrate Easter, the locals organise colourful parades, including distinctive hooded Nazareno groups. It's also a great time to enjoy some Andalucian seafood, which is traditionally eaten during the Easter fast.
At the end of April, Amsterdam is the place to be. King's Day is a celebration of Dutch identity, when the streets become a mass of orange, and the parties start early in the morning. Stay for a weekend to enjoy the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh's masterpieces, and set aside King's Day itself to get involved in the fun.
If you want to hit the beach this April, Cyprus is a prime candidate. The weather is warm (but not scorchingly hot), the beaches and water parks will be relatively empty, and the diving conditions are superb. It's the perfect place for an off-season family escape.
