The Most Famous Hiking Routes in Europe

The Most Famous Hiking Routes in Europe

What could be better than discovering untouched nature or getting up-close views of mountain ranges? There are so many hiking trails at a diverse range of difficulties and heights across Europe. Get closer to nature with some of our favourites!

  1. The King's Trail, Sweden

Trek a section of the King's Trail or Kungsleden that extends from Abisko (north) to Hemavan (south). Along this 540-kilometre trail are dwarf pine trees, barren tundra plains, valleys, ponds, rivers, and lakes. A famous route passes the highly protected Vindelfjällens Nature Reserve. In spite of the location above the Arctic Circle, Kungsleden is a great choice for different types of hikers. Thanks to the well-maintained trails on level terrain and relatively low altitudes, most people can trek including children. But you must plan a slower pace when you are accompanied by young kids.

  2. El Camino, Northern Spain

On this magical road, you can walk, hop on a donkey, cycle, or drive. Adventure on a spiritual path through this pilgrimage route to St. James shrine in Santiago de Compostela cathedral. Consider the widely used French Way that starts in Roncesvalles town. Or another one referred to as Camino Francés beginning at St-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France. Among the stunning scenes along Camino is the layered vista of Pyrenees Mountains, a few miles from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. This is the highest point just before Roncesvalles.

  3. Grand Canyon of Europe Provence

Also called Gorges du Verdon, this transfixing canyon has several jaw-dropping spots anchored by turquoise green river. It stretches over 24 kilometres with gorgeous 6-kilometre tall limestone hills overlooking Verdon River. The effect has earned it a reputation as one of the natural wonders of the world and the most beautiful European canyon. Try whitewater rafting on the river.

  4. Seven Hanging Valleys Trails, Lagoa, Portugal

The beautiful municipality of Algarve combines extraordinary sights like the Marinha cliffs, Benagil cliffs, Alfanzina lighthouse, Senhora da Rocha chapel, and the most beautiful beach in Europe, Carvoeiro. Stop by Ferragudo if you fancy fishing. Embark on the hike at Senhora da Rocha Chapel and end in Carvoeiro Beach.

  5. Trolltunga, Norway

This 27-kilometre excursion may take 10-12 hours to complete. Trolltunga means troll's tongue and takes you through Ringedal dam and mountain glacial potholes. Climb the top of 1,100-metre cliff hovering 700 metres above Lake Ringedalsvatnet.
