Excited to get back on the slopes, but not sure where to go? HomeToGo, the marketplace with the world's largest selection of holiday rentals, has unveiled its 2023/4 Ski Index, aiming to aid skiers and snowboarders in their destination selection for the season.
Collating and rating 100 locations across Europe, the index uses a depth of data to assign ski resorts scores across the categories of price (looking for low costs on accommodation and lift passes), crowds and queues (seeking out areas in which low traveller searches and high lift capacities promise short waits and quiet descents), and slopes (scanning for plentiful pistes and, by way of activities such as night skiing, extended hours). Category points are then combined to calculate each ski resort's total score out of the possible maximum of 30.
Destinations across fifteen countries feature in the index, with top French and Swiss spots listing alongside off-the-beaten-path options in locations such as Slovakia and Sweden. However, Italy's Sestriere ultimately claims first place with a total score of 27.09. Saalfelden Leogang in Austria follows in second place with a score of 26.90, and Andorra's Grandvalira in third with 25.94.

How HomeToGo Produced this Guide
Data about European ski resorts was gathered in three categories: Price, Crowds & Queues, and Slopes. Each category received a score between 5 and 10, with 5 representing the lowest data point, 10 representing the highest data point, and the ideal score being 30 out of 30. The following equation was used to calculate scores:
Score(i) = 5 · (x(i) - xmin ) / (xmax - xmin ) + 5
Price Score: Exclusive HomeToGo price data, alongside information from tourism board and winter sports websites, was used to determine the median price per night for a holiday rental and the cost of a non-discounted high season adult lift pass in each resort. The resort with the lowest costs received a maximum score of 10, and the remaining areas were awarded a score of 5 or higher. Price data was collected in October and November 2023. Costs may be subject to change and (in the case of lift passes) dynamic pricing.
Crowds & Queues Score: The traveller interest for each resort during the 2023/4 winter season was assessed using exclusive HomeToGo search data alongside general search volume insights from tools such as Semrush. Additionally, chairlift capacities for each resort were collected using online winter sports portals. The resort with the fewest searches and the highest chairlift capacity received a maximum score of 10, and the remaining areas were awarded a score of 5 or higher.
Slopes Score: Tourism board websites were used to find the total kilometres of slopes accessible with the cheapest high season adult day lift pass in each resort. The destination with the most kilometres of slopes was awarded a maximum score of 10, and the remaining areas were awarded a score of 5 or higher. Additional, weighted points were added for the presence of activities that extend available on-piste hours, such as night skiing.
