The Top 5 Beaches for Surfing in Europe

The Top 5 Beaches for Surfing in Europe

With a massive variety of extremely different landscapes to choose from, surfers are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches with enough waves to test even the very best. Here are our top 5 surfing beaches in Europe.

  1. Rossnowlagh, Ireland

Located in the small town of Bundoran in the North West of the Emerald Isle, Rossnowlagh is the perfect beach for beginners or intermediates looking to improve. It's also a great spot to experience the famous welcome of the Irish, with pubs and restaurants aplenty. Ireland has become more and more popular with surfers but still stands as a relatively undiscovered gem within the global surfing community, making it perfect for those who enjoy uncrowded waves.

  2. Zarauth, Spain

From one Celtic culture to another. Zarauth is located in the Basque country of Spain. This beautiful beach offers plenty of sunshine and the longest beach break in all of Spain, with beach break walls measuring up to 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometres). The local town is also a great place for foodies, with local specialities such as Marmitako stew and bean dishes on offer.

  3. Woolacombe, England

Back to the British Isles for this one, Woolacombe beach is located in Devon and provides a wide variety of peaks suitable for surfers of multiple levels. Most are suited to both beginners and intermediate level but for the pros, a trip to the reef known as the Grunta is just the ticket. When you're not surfing, enjoy sights and sounds found on the beautiful South West Coast Path or stop into the oldest nightclub in the country for a dance!

  4. Cantinho de Baia, Portugal

Found in the sun-soaked town of Peniche, the waves of Cantinho de Baia are a one-stop-shop for every kind of surfer, offering left and right peaks that start out slow and then pick up speed as they near the inside. Cantinho de Baia is also a short boat road away from the Island of Berlengas, where a nature reserve and crystal-clear waters ideal for both divers and snorkelers will keep you entertained on your downtime.

  5. Côte des Basques, France

Another Basque region gem, this time in France, Côte des Basques is perfect for surfers looking to combine their time in the waves with a high degree of French glamour. Famous as the birthplace of the French surfing scene, here you can test yourself in one of the many surf competitions held in the area.
