Step back in time on your holiday in Aegina

Remote and rugged, the hillside community of Paleochora is peacefully quiet. Paleochora was the capital of Aegina from the 9th century until the 1820s, when the Byzantine village was abandoned.

The ruinous remains of the Temple of Aphaea adorn a pine-dotted hill overlooking the hazy Saronic Gulf. Constructed in c.480 BCE, they honour the local deity. Sadly, the splendid pediment featuring Trojan War sculptures was looted during the 19th century and now form the facade of Munich's Glyptothek.

Worthwhile walks around Aegina

Northwest of the marina, tumbledown pillars in honey shades and a single remaining vertical are all that remains of the former Temple of Apollo. The Sanctuary Museum tells of the surrounding acropolis built here in the 5th century BCE.

The Christos Kapralos Museum of Aegina is housed in the famous sculptor's former home on the coast, and at just under two kilometres from Aegina Town, it's well worth the walk. His sculptures, including the 40 metre-long "The Monument of the Battle of Pindos", are a sight to behold.

Festivals of food, music and art

You might expect food festivals in this part of the world to centre around the hordes of seafood hauled up in local fishermen's nets, most of which you will find at seaside tavernas run by local families. Aegina Fistiki Fest, however, is celebrated here each September and is incongruously all about the pistachio.

The three-day celebration is an appropriately nutty combination of music, art and culinary events involving the delicious middle eastern nut.
