Ayrshire is one of Scotland's best-known areas for agriculture and there are many restaurants in the town which concentrate on using local produce wherever possible. Look for your local farm shop, where you will be able to buy Ayrshire potatoes, local cheeses, fresh fish and locally reared beef. To round off your meal head to Renaldo's ice cream parlour in Sandgate; the only difficulty will be choosing which of the 36 flavours to sample.

Beaches and seaside fun for the kids in Ayr

Ayr boasts a beach right in the middle of town and there are further beaches at nearby Troon and Saltcoats. It might be a bit chilly for a dip in the sea but the acres of sands are the perfect place for building sandcastles, flying a kite or playing football. Also popular with younger visitors is the Heads of Ayr farm park where you can meet the animals, have a shot on a mini digger and go wild in the adventure playgrounds.

Exploring Burns Country from a base in Ayr

Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, lived much of his life in Alloway on the edge of Ayr town and there are many locations in the surrounding countryside significant in the poet's life. A great starting point is the Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway where you can find out more about the life of Burns and his most famous works. Close by is the famous Alloway Auld Kirk and the Brig o'Doon bridge, both of which feature in his poem Tam O'Shanter.
