Some of the tightly packed houses in Kotor's Old Town are just two metres wide, while the streets are named for their medieval-era functions: 'wood place', 'meal place', 'armory'. The buildings' limestone facades were constructed by the Venetians in the 15th century, when Kotor was an important trading port for salt.

For spectacular views across the entire town and the sparkling bay, climb the 1,350 steps up to the Castle of San Giovanni in Montenegro. Overlooking the town at a height of 1,200 metre, its been an operational fortress from the 9th to the 19th century, serving everyone from the Byzantines to the Venetians.

Kotor Festivals

Taking place in the height of summer, Kotor's International Summer Carnival brings theatre, music, food and spectacular costumes to crowds of thousands. Acts travel from all over Montenegro to take part in the parade through Kotor's Old Town, in this riot of colour that runs for several days.

At the end of August, Boka Nights sees the bay taken over by boats and dazzling fireworks displays, while Montenegro Dance Festival in April is an exciting celebration of dance in all its forms.
