The Elizabeth Walls

One of Northumberland's most celebrated sites are the Elizabeth Walls which engird the city. In fact, they were commenced before the time of Queen Elizabeth during the reign of Edward I. They are some of the best preserved examples in all of Europe and the most expensive project of England's Golden Age.

Berwick upon-Tweed Barracks and Main Guard

Check out the cannons and impressive military fortifications and regalia at this fascinating English Heritage site. Built during the 18th century, the barracks were one of the first purpose built barracks in England. The exhibition inside gives you an in-depth account of the wars from the Civil War to the First World War.

Lawrence Stephen Lowry is renowned for his matchstick men paintings of industrial scenes located in the north-west of England.
