England's only mountain forest, Whinlatter forest is best explored by bike. The 8 km Quercus Trail is perfect for a meandering ride, packed with stunning views and shady spots.

This exhibition presents the work and life of Beatrix Potter, while simultaneously bringing to life her popular animal characters. Outside the house, lies the Peter Rabbit garden designed after the original illustrations of the book.

Inside the house, each animal figure has its nook and cranny. Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, a hedgehog who washes children's lost clothes in her kitchen and many other friendly animal figures await their small human fans.

The Fun Factory Bowness

Children also love the Fun Factory. Kids can make new friends here as they navigate the multi-level play frame, which is full of wobbly bridges, swing balls and tunnels. Meanwhile, adults can enjoy scenic views of Lake Windermere at the cafe.

St. Martin's Church

The east window of this stately church is renowned for its medieval stained glass, one of the best preserved examples in the North-West of England.

The stained glass was restored by a lesser known artist from London, Henry Hughes in 1870. Hughes also created the church's exquisite murals at this time.
