The sleepy market town of Brampton is notable for its buildings constructed from the local sandstone, giving it a timeless appeal. Holding its first market in 1252, after Henry III granted the town its own charter, Brampton remains today a vibrant commercial and social hub in the region.

Lose yourself in history

Erected in 1817, Moot Hall sits in the town centre and has a striking octagonal design. Today, the building hosts the Tourist Information Centre, while you can use the external staircase to access the square turret and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the lush surroundings.

Be awed by the stained glass windows at St. Martin’s Church. At the fringe of the town is the Old Parish Church, which was actually constructed from stone taken from nearby Hadrian’s Wall. Today, only the chancel remains.

Brampton for kids

Older children will love the Solway Aviation Museum in the nearby city of Carlisle. The intriguing museum has displays of aircraft designs, aviation artefacts and a collection of historic aircraft, especially WWII models.

Watch the kids' imaginations flourish at Carlisle Castle, as they hear dramatic tales of warring clans, heroic rescues and exciting battles narrated through games and interactive exhibits. Take the tour before refuelling in the picnic area.

Commune with nature

Plan a trip to Talkin Tarn Country Park, which is just two miles south-east of Brampton. The 120 acres of woodland has hiking trails ideal for both active walks and leisurely strolls, while the stunning 65-acre glacial lake is the park's highlight.

The mighty Hadrian’s Wall, built by the Romans, is also located close to Brampton. It stretches for 73 miles, from Wallsend in Newcastle up to Solway in North West Cumbria. Two miles south of Brampton, meanwhile, is Gelt Woods, an RSPB Nature Reserve. Venture deep into the woods and you may just stumble across a rock with a Roman inscription from the 3rd century.
