Despite the city's historicism, cuisine in Caceres sizzles with innovation. For some of the best dishes in town, check out Michelin starred Atrio. The attached hotel's rooms are decorated with Andy Warhol originals.

At the other end of the scale, the Old Town's convents sell delectable egg yolk and almond sweetmeats through a revolving door that enable the nuns to remain unseen. A throng of great restaurants are tucked away on Parador de Caceres. Try Torre de Sande – its walled garden makes for an idyllic dinner destination.

Towering cultural attractions

Centro de Artes Visuales Fundacion Helga de Alvear is designed by the same duo responsible for Atrio's interiors. The contemporary art collection was once privately owned by a German collector, but its chic doors have since opened to the public.

The architecture of Caceres' Old Town tells of its embattled history. Roman, Islamic, Gothic and Renaissance styles are discernible in the 30 or more towers that dominate the city skyline. Of them, Torre de Bujaco is the best known. Overlooking the Palaza Major, it first erected nearly 1000 years ago, but has undergone renovations throughout its history.

Pilgrimages worth making

Stroll along the Via de la Plata (the Silver Route), a Roman road between Seville and Astorga. It was once the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

Don't miss the Arco de la Estrella, which guards the entrance to the Ciudad Monumental. Its width was intended to allow for carriages to clatter underneath. Built by Manuel de Lara Churriguera on the foundations of a 14th century version, it features a frieze of the Virgin mentioned in its name.
