Journey to Sardinia in antiquity via its archaeology, at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cagliari. The collection includes sculptures, weaponry, and the remarkable Pintadera terracotta mold, used for decorating bread.

The Pisan-Romanesque Cagliari Cathedral dates from the 13th century, though its present façade is somewhat newer, having been added in the 1930s. Renovations in the 17th and 18th centuries account for its Baroque details. Keep an eye out for the 15th century triptych by Flemish painter Rogier van der Weyden.

Cagliari's upbeat outskirts

The most important historic city fortification is the Bastione di Saint Remy. In the 19th century a rampart was built into the 14th century walls, linking the castle district with the marina. Today, the panoramic views from the terrace are spectacular.

Just east of the town you'll find Poetto Beach. During summer nights, it's known as a party scene, but during the day its crystal clear waters are filled with swimmers and the sand with volleyball games.

A festival like no other

Every first of May since the year 1656, the streets of Cagliari have erupted into life for a vibrant religious procession. The Festival of Sant'Efisio celebrates the eponymous Roman soldier sent to the island to suppress Christianity by Emperor Diocletian.

Efisio, however, had a religious experience and became a follower. When asked to renounce his new religion he refused, was sentenced to death, and later canonized. The religious procession, the only one in the world to last four days, attracts visitors from around the world.
