The Cinque Terre is the name given to the towns of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore on Italy's picturesque Ligurian coastline. These historic villages have changed little in recent years, and their rugged location over the sea is an ideal destination for a uniquely scenic holiday letting.

Seafood specialities

As you might expect from coastal villages, freshly caught seafood dominates the menu at most restaurants, with anchovies, mussels, and branzino all particularly popular. Try La Cantina di Miky in Monterosso for well-prepared seafood specialities. The region of Liguria is also famous for focaccia bread and for pesto alla Genovese. You can also order local wines in most restaurants, or take a few bottles home as a souvenir.

Head for the beach

There are plenty of beaches here, though some are more suited to families than others. The Monterosso beaches are ideal for those travelling with young children; both the Old Town and Fegina beaches have sun loungers, umbrellas, and even pedalos for hire. The small beach at Vernazza is a great alternative for those travelling with young kids, where the sand slopes gently into the sheltered waters of the village's small harbour.

Explore all five villages

Each locality in the Cinque Terre offers its own character and charms, but they're connected by a network of paths along the cliffs as well as by rail, so you can easily explore by foot or via public transportation. Monterosso, the largest town in the Cinque Terre, has two beaches and plenty of bars and restaurants. Corniglia is the only one of the villages located on top of the cliffs, rather than at sea level. It is quite a climb to get here, but the view is well worth the effort. The convenient railway line also means you can easily enjoy a day trip to Pisa, Genoa, or the exclusive resort of Portofino.
