Kids love playing on the beaches of Zeeland, and besides the yelps of pleasure normally resounding on their straits, beach festivals such as Beachboom and Concert at Sea rock in the summer. The facilities at Zeeland's beaches are second to none, with chilled pavilions to hang out in, with restaurants to dine on delicious fresh fish, and bars to catch a drink at sunset. For those with a sporty side, kite surfing is big here, along with surfing and sailing. There's also the Water Jump, which catapults you four metres above the water, and provides endless enjoyment for all ages. Mountain biking is a great way to see Zeeland, and there are countless cycle routes to keep you peddling. Cycling is so embedded in Dutch culture that you'll find specially designed bike cafés called 'fietscafes' in the area, strategically positioned along some of the longer routes.

Getting around

The seaside resort is naturally blessed with a favourable climate and fertile soils, and has been so well maintained that it is officially recognised as a healing centre after examinations by the SGS Institute Fresenius. Heilsee Lake is one of the most health-enhancing spots in the area, and is a centre for something called 'balneotherapy' (bath therapy) treatment, aimed at illness prevention. Therapy and wellness are a big part of the local culture here, so you'll find no shortage of spas, yoga classes and healthy eating spots around your seafront apartment or holiday home. Cadzand Bad is another premier bathing hotspot, and low tide has been known to reveal ancient finds such as million-year-old shark teeth. It's also the one of the region's most relaxing spots for a swim.

Veere

Veere is a charming port town in the Netherlands' Zeeland province, whose name means 'ferry'. The Great Church was designed by Flemish architects and the local culture was supported by patrons at the castle of Sandenburgh, which still stands today. The town is featured in Van Loon's Lives, a humorous fantasy by Hendrik Willem Van Loon written in 1942.

Oostkapelle Beach

Strips of white sand and blue ocean dominate this striking and restorative beach. The beach is known for its characterful beach huts, known as 'groynes', which create a cosy and relaxed atmosphere. The beach has won several internationally recognised 'blue flag' awards for environmental standards, and is a great space for water sports and sun-lazing, depending on your mood.
