Excursions around Faro

The rest of the Algarve is easily accessible from Faro by train. Head west, and you'll reach more lively destinations such as Albufeira, or head east to see quiet towns such as pretty Tavira, which sits on the Spanish border. It's also possible to reach the capital, Lisbon, in just over two hours by train, and if you book in advance, you can get some fantastic deals.

The Ria Formosa is a strip of wetlands that stretches for many kilometres along the coast of the Algarve. Traversable by boat as a full- or half-day trip from Faro, it's the perfect chance to see many species of birds and fish and be back at your Faro apartment by dinner time.
