The area is now home to visitor attractions, including the Roman fort of Vindolanda and its museum. Here, you can get a real feel for what life was like at this remote outpost, as well as learn about what Roman luxuries the soldiers brought with them, such as bath houses and even central heating. Back in town, there are more historical attractions, including the 14th-century Hexham Old Gaol, which is now a living museum with actors giving you a glimpse into the past. Hexham Abbey, dating from the 7th century, is also worth a visit. You can still visit the original Saxon crypt below the church, and enjoy the stunning stained glass windows from the 19th century right up to 2012.

Celebrate local music and food

The annual Hexham Gathering, which has been celebrated for over 20 years, features young folk musicians, singers, and dancers from the area as well as further afield. Held over the last weekend in May, it offers performances in various town venues, including the Queen's Hall Arts Centre. Whereas most of the stars are youngsters, there is no age restriction for the audience if you want to join in the fun. Hexham, an old market town, still hosts a farmers' market on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month in appropriately named Market Place. Pick up some local produce and prepare a feast.
