Boating on the Serpentine is also a lot of fun in summer months and offers the chance to escape the crowds.

The South Kensington museums are also great for kids with lots of interactive exhibits and events, but also popular is the famous Madam Tussauds, a short tube ride away. Whatever you fancy doing on a night out from your Hyde Park apartment, you'll have plenty of choice. The Royal Albert Hall is one of London's foremost entertainment venues with concerts and performances by the world's biggest stars. Mayfair, to the east of Hyde Park, has a huge concentration of top-notch restaurants, many of which have Michelin stars. Casual dining brasseries and chain restaurants are also plentiful close to Hyde Park.

Museums in South Kensington or shopping on Oxford Street?

Walk through Hyde Park to the southern boundary and you emerge onto Kensington High Street from where Exhibition Road leads to some of London's most well-visited museums. Choose a day exploring dinosaurs, animals and evolution at the Natural History Museum, looking at exquisite costumes and tapestries in the V&A, or learn about the history of medicine or maths at the Science Museum. Entry to all three is free, although there are some ticketed temporary exhibitions. Also open for visits is Kensington Palace, former home of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Head to the north-eastern corner of Hyde Park and you're at Marble Arch, one end of London's famous Oxford Street. This is where most of the UK's premier retail brands have their flagship stores. Bond Street is where you'll find the designer shops and high-end jewellers, and the famous Hamley's toy shop – a dream come true for every child – is on Regent Street.
