Castles and cloisters

San Pedro Castle, or Jaca Citadel, is the last remaining military fortress in its style to be left standing in the world. It was built in the 16th and 17th centuries by King Philip II on a pentagonal plan, within which you'll find the Military Miniatures Museum. While deer roam the former moat, the structure has lost none of its majesty.

San Juan de la Peña Monastery's 'new' Baroque building dates to the 17th century, and its old Romanesque building is from the tenth century. Don't miss your chance to stroll through its ancient cloisters.

On the first Friday of May, a medieval battle is waged in Jaca. Jousts, tournaments, and other historical re-enactments recall a medieval battle that took place here. A colourful flag waving show joins ancient Aragonese sports like javelin.

The pan-European celebration of Santa Orosia finds representation in Jaca in the form of traditional dances performed in the Pyrenees for hundreds of years. You'll hear the sounds of ancient sacred instruments, including that of the surprisingly versatile three-holed flute.
