Dragon's appetite

Polish dumplings, or pierogi, are a favourite national cuisine sought by visitors and locals alike – they're just as popular abroad! Their appreciation comes to a peak at the annual Pierogi Festival in mid-August, where traditional flavours such as potato/cheese/onion, cabbage/mushroom, and sweet cheese compete against new and inventive combinations. Recent winners include broad bean/bacon, smoked meat/herb, and duck/apricot. Delicious!

Another symbol of this magical city is the Dragon of Wawel Hill, lovingly known as Smok Wawelski. Many legends surround this cherished character, and these come to life during the first weekend in June when the exciting Dragon Parade (Parada Smoków) rolls through town. Watch in awe as boats on the Vistula river offer boisterous firework displays accompanied by music and a giant balloon show. The next day, watch for the dragon floats proudly competing in the streets.
