Whisky galore

Scotland is famous for its whisky, and the area around Kyle of Lochalsh and Skye doesn't disappoint. The most famous, and the oldest, distillery in the area is Talisker, located on the island of Skye itself. You can take a tour of the distillery and learn how Scottish whisky is made, as well as taste a dram of the local produce at the end of the visit, of course!

If you want to head off the beaten track, head to the smaller island of Raasay between Skye and the mainland where a new distillery has now opened; the first legal distillery on Raasay, as the area used to be well known for its illegal stills. Raasay Distillery has also opened a new visitor centre, allowing visitors to be among the first to try this brand new whisky.

Kyle of Lochalsh for kids

Kids will love exploring the unspoilt beaches around your Kyle of Lochalsh accommodation. Appelcross beach on the mainland can only be reached via a twisting country road, but it does mean that even in the height of summer, this area never gets really crowded. The sheltered bay makes it ideal for swimming, or you can always stay on shore and enjoy the view across the sea to the islands. Take a boat trip with a difference with Seaprobe Atlantis' glass-bottomed boat which allows the family to enjoy the views above and below the water.

Explore highlands and islands

On the mainland, Kyle of Lochalsh is close to the pretty village of Plockton, instantly recognisable to fans of Hamish Macbeth which was filmed in the area. Its whitewashed houses overlook the picturesque Loch Carron, a popular site for dolphin watching boat trips and sea kayaking. Head further along the coast to Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most famous of Scotland's castles, dating from the 13th century. It is located on an island at the point where three sea lochs meet, and can only be reached via a bridge over the water. Take a drive over the bridge to the Isle of Skye, and you will soon realise why this is one of the most popular visitor destinations in Scotland.

Alongside its stunning mountain scenery, the island is dotted with prehistoric monuments and standing stones. The best preserved is Dun Beag just outside Dunvegan. Travel a few kilometres and a few centuries further to Dunvegan Castle, which dates from the 12th century and has its own walled gardens.
