Culture appreciation

While in Alnwick, visit The Alnwick Garden, a fascinating open-air attraction designed by the famous garden creator Capability Brown. Fascinating at any time of year, it is, of course, most colourful during the spring and summer months. Alnwick is also home to the famous Barter Books, a huge second-hand book shop housed in the town's old railway station. Pick up a bargain, or sit and enjoy a quiet read by their log fire. Make sure to look out for the model train that runs over the tops of the bookcases! Step back into a more civilised age with a visit to Paxton Hall, a fine 18th c. house which houses even finer Chippendale furniture and works of art by Sir David Wilkie and Sir Henry Raeburn. Take the guided tour of the house, and explore its gardens and grounds, or even take a relaxing rowing boat trip up the River Tweed.

Northumbrian beaches

The Northumbrian coast is famous for its great beaches, and Lindisfarne is no exception. The Harbour Beach is not only ideal for a day out with the kids, but you can enjoy the view of Lindisfarne Castle while you relax. Adventurous kids will love the idea of walking along the causeway, either to or from Lindisfarne; just make sure you check the tides carefully! Alternatively, you can take a boat trip from Seahouses on the mainland. Choose between a day trip to the Lindisfarne, or head further out to sea to the Farne Islands, where thousands of sea birds make their home throughout the year. Take any Harry Potter fans in your family to Bamburgh and Alnwick on the mainland. Both these towns have impressive castles which featured in the popular series of films.

Step back in time

Lindisfarne was one of the earliest centres of Christianity in the UK. This explains its alternative name, Holy Island. Lindisfarne Priory is a must-see for day trippers or those staying in Lindisfarne accommodation. Although now ruined, the museum dedicated to the the Priory contains many of the treasures which have been found during archaeological digs on the site, as well as telling the story of Holy Island and its holy men. Lindisfarne Castle dominates the whole island, and can be seen from kilometres away on the mainland. The 16th c. building was a defensive fortress, but is now also home to a beautiful garden designed by artist Gertrude Jekyll in 1911.
