Vilnius: A region full of history and adventure

The capital of Vilnius is home to a number of tour operators that can take you around the nearby countryside to admire some of Lithuania's hidden secrets. Just 45km from the capital is the Neris Regional Park surrounding the Neris River, the villages, and the layers of history which have built up around it. The Neris is just one of the beautiful rivers around Vilnius, where you can kayak or just take a walk and a picnic on the banks of the river.

Winter in and around Vilnius brings the opportunity for skiing and snowboarding, the Liepkalnis ski resort being the closest to the capital (just 6km away). To see some of the age-old history of Lithuania, the town of Medininkai is just 33km away, boasting stunning highlands and a 14th-century brick castle.

Contemporary celebrations and ancient traditions

The Lithuanians love to celebrate, with music beating in every heart. Every year the Vilnius Festival celebrates and exhibits classical, renaissance, baroque, and jazz music - not your typical music festival! The festival is known as one of the most prestigious and diverse in Europe and takes place in the summer. Every four years you can also experience the World Lithuanian Song Festival, celebrating the long tradition of song festivals in Lithuania.

To see how Lithuanians bring together their ancient culture with a modern touch, the Feast of Saint John is a wonderful example. Actually a celebration of the summer solstice, wreaths are sent floating down the River Neris, and colourful decorations are set out in streets and forests. With the Batholomeu Fair, also in the summer, you can relive Vilnius during the Middle Ages with this fair of arts, crafts, and guild tradition.

Self-catering in your holiday home

Self-catering in the capital is a straightforward task with a wide variety of restaurants and cafes to choose from, should you want to eat out. There are three main supermarket chains - Maxima, Rimi, and Iki, all of which are in Vilnius and any other major town.

Despite Lithuania's small population, there are plenty of supermarkets dotted around the country. Generally speaking, supermarkets in Lithuania are open daily, although there are some smaller supermarkets which may close on Sundays.
