The first stop after your accommodation in Lyon should be Sapna, which might be a little unexpected given that it’s an Asian restaurant. But it really is a must-try. The oysters in broth are to die for, as are the teriyaki cuttlefish and duck tartare - near any accommodation in the 1 Arrondissement.

For a modern take on traditional French fare, La Bijouterie is the place. The best dishes are the plaice fillet with creamy pistachio and the leeks with Choron sauce.

Our final choice is Bouchon Thomas. This is a restaurant without pretensions. It’s great food, but it’s at a good price, and it’s filled with traditional French ingredients like foie gras, quail, and our favourite dish, the roasted sausage with pistachio.

Towering Spires to Fine Art: Lyon’s Art & Culture

For a whirlwind tour of the history of art, head from your accommodation to the Musée des Beaux-Arts. After the Louvre, this is France’s biggest fine art museum, with over 70 rooms and paintings spanning over 600 years of art history. There are classics, too, from van Gogh to Picasso.

Lyon Cathedral, built between the 12th and 15th centuries, is a gothic classic. It’s filled with glorious stained-glass windows from the 1300s and a wonderful astronomical clock that is more than 700 years old.

The real must see though, is the Institut Lumière. This is the very building where the Lumière brothers lived, the fathers of the art of film. They invented the cinematograph – the first ever motion picture camera – and produced 1000 films together, many of which can be seen here.
