Barnard Castle culture

Head south from Middleton-in-Teesdale, and you’ll reach the larger town of Barnard Castle, which has a wealth of attractions for culture-loving holidaymakers. Although the 12th-century castle after which the town is named now stands in ruins, it is still a popular attraction offering fabulous views over the River Tees. The Bowes Museum features a wide range of art and artefacts, including fashions worn by key figures in history and an intriguing 18th-century silver swan automaton.

Activities for children

If the hiking trails in the Pennines prove too demanding for younger children, the easier walking routes in Hamsterley Forest, near Bishop Auckland, might be a better option. The forest also has mountain bike trails, and you can rent bicycles if you haven’t brought your own. Younger children will love spending a few hours at Weatheriggs Animal Rescue in Barnard Castle, where they can pet and feed animals such as rabbits, chicks, goats, and even snakes.

Explore the River Tees

Head a few miles north up along the River Tees, either on foot or by car, and you’ll soon come to the larger village of Newbiggin and the Bowlees Visitor Centre. This centre, an ideal introduction to the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offers information on some of the best sites to see and rules for respecting the countryside. Further north, visitors will soon come to the impressive High Force Waterfall, which drops 21 metres into the river below.
