It revolves around an ancient, 800 year old oak tree named the Indian Trail Tree. Legend states that it was curved deliberately while it was still a sapling to provide approaching fishermen with a direction to their preferred hunting ground. Sometime later it rooted itself a second time, forming a natural arch.

At 153 feet tall, this imposing feature is unusual in having a series of ships ladders rather than a spiral staircase to ascend to its summit. A light flashes from its top every four seconds.

Ocean Crest Pier

Voted the best pier in North Carolina, you'll find the fish biting here. It is the longest pier on the southern Cape Fear Coast and a source of prize-winning king and Spanish mackerel, as well as fishing competitions that attract visitors from miles around. Stroll along the pier on a summer's day and take in the sea views.

Oak Island Pier is distinguished from Ocean Crest by the profusion of attractions that surround its intersection with the coast. Here you'll find Pier House, which has all your fishing needs taken care of, plus you can enjoy the freshly caught catch-of-the-day at Pier Restaurant. Fort Caswell

There's so much going on at this pre-Civil War through to WWI fort; from educational events to services. The grounds are privately owned by the Baptist Church, so check the days it's open to the public before you go.

Oak Island Beach

This tranquil beach is superbly well equipped for family days in the sun. Enjoy warm water throughout the season, and its easy to rent equipment for watersports from several companies located right on the shore. Inexpensive and excellent restaurants overlook the beach - the best place to catch the sunset.
