Taste of the lakes' region

Regional Croatian specialities are the strength of Restoran Degenija, and with all the lakes in the area you can't miss their grilled trout with boiled potatoes, or perhaps their whole fish platter if you're really feeling hungry and can't make up your mind!

Grab one of the many seats or homey wood benches with a view at rustic Restoran Borje, which makes fine use of its naturally blessed surroundings. Dig into hearty comfort food like beans and sausages, and leave a little room for a lavish cheesecake dessert.

Local colour

Learn more about this water wonderland at nearby Rastoke watermill village, which makes use of the fruitful landscape differently. Originally settled at the side of the convergence of two rivers, most of the structures stand as historical relics.

Just east of the park, near to the Bosnian border, you can fly to higher ground at the Zeljava Air Base Museum. Step back into the recent past when this ghost town was in use, and see old planes, runways and hangars sitting in the brush, stuck in time.

Go exploring

Seek out the two major waterfalls in the park; Large Waterfall and Galovac Waterfall. Both are well worth the hunt with their white veils of water crashing into teal pools below, framed by tall rocks and emerald trees. Follow the signs and marked trails to find your way.

Hiking along winding and picturesque wooden boardwalks is enjoyable enough in itself, but when they lead you to places like Lower Lakes Canyon and its corresponding lakes, the adventure becomes all the more exciting. All four seasons offer new experiences in this National Park.
