In Stara Varos, the historic district of Podgorica, you can almost conceive of the 400 year old Ottoman Turkish town. Two mosques have endured the interim, including the impressive Starodoganjska Mosque, which dates from the 15th century, and the Osmanagic Mosque from the 18th.

Skadar Lake is the largest in the Balkan peninsula, and at a size of 40,000 hectares, it's more like a sea. Podgoricans come for its natural beauty, its cultural monuments and the watersports. Have a look at the mysterious ruins of Zabljak Crnojevica, which were briefly a stronghold of ruler Ivan Crnojevic before being sacked by Ottoman invaders in 1478.
