Portugal's Best Golf Holidays on a Budget

The best known areas for golf in Portugal are on the Algarve coast, so if you're on a budget, look at some of the lesser-known areas of the country instead. Getting off the beaten track not only gives the opportunity to explore some of Portugal's hidden golf gems, but to do a bit of sightseeing at the same time.

Twilight Golf

Many of Portugal's most exclusive clubs have a twilight rate, usually half the full rate for 18 holes.Twilight hours start in late afternoon, usually around 3.30pm, and you are allowed to play as long as you can, daylight permitting. Twilight golf means you are not playing at the hottest time of the day and you have your mornings free for sightseeing or hitting the beach.
Lisbon Area

Most golfers make a bee-line for the famous courses of the Algarve but there is just as good golfing on the coast near the capital, Lisbon. Several golf resorts such as the Pestana Resort near Sintra offer discounts on green fees to residents, so check for special deals and promotions before booking accommodation.
Estela Golf

One of Portugal's best coastal links courses is Estela Golf, north of Porto. This is a true hidden gem which most visitors don't get to experience, at prices far less than the famous clubs further south. Book two or more rounds for a discount on fees.

Portugal's Most Beautiful Golf Courses

If you think Portuguese golf is all about wide open fairways and manicured greens, then think again. There is a wide range of different types of golfing available, if you know where to look.

1. Salgados Golf Club

Located on the coast near Albufeira, Salgados has been designed with the environment in mind. The large number of water features provides a challenge for any golfer. There are great views out to sea from many parts of the course.
2. Penha Longa

The Penha Longa resort is set in a nature reserve to the west of Lisbon with rolling hills, lakes and rocky outcrops. The landscapes and views change with every hole and provide a round of golf to remember.
3. Monte Rei

The Jack Nicklaus designed Monte Rei is situated in the far east of the Algarve, almost on the Spanish border. Unlike the other Algarve courses, this one is hilly, offering great views back to the coast through the mature trees.
