Tagine and Babouche

Moroccan cooking at its freshest is served up at Le Petit Beur, which specialises in changeable daily offerings which include tagines, briouates and brochettes. In the evening, you can enjoy live performances by an oud player.

Fast food palaces line the Avenue Mohammed V. Two of the best are Bidawai and Inza. Street vendors offer unusual snacks such as babouche (snails) in an aromatic soup, fava bean soup (known as bisara) and syrupy pastries. Wash it all down with some lip smacking sugar cane juice.

Money and panoramas

At the Moroccan Museum of Money, entry is free on Fridays. Marvel at paintings in the Bank Al-Maghrib's collection. The exhibition is a superb tour of the country's history and currency from the Roman period onwards.

On top of the ancient citadel is the ribat from which the city takes its name. The highest point is the Plateforme du Semaphore. From here, locals once spotted seagoing invaders. Today, you can still see to Sale. Don't forget the Andalusian Gardens, a popular meeting spot for locals.

Wandering in Rabat

Rabat Marina is a 17th century walled site on the seafront that is so large you're likely to get lost. It's so pleasant to amble along with the sun and sea in sight. Have a look at the covered Souq as-Sebbat and the shops on the Rue Souika.

Continue past a 14th century Grand Mosque to the Jewish quarter, and you'll find loads of exquisite jewellery shops. Finally, venture up the hill to the panoramic views at the Kasbah Les Oudaias.
