Tastes of the town

For a taste of the sea, right on the beach, head to El Peñón de Sopelana. Although there are an inordinate number of options, this little place has the best spot in town, and it's especially impressive by night.

The seafood is fresh and succulent in Salobrena, but the town also has two restaurants that cater to travelling carnivores. Try La Bodega, with its hanging meats, butter-like steak and sherry by the barrel. You can also enjoy surf with your turf, and the clams are superb.

Arab castles and ancient artefacts

Castillo Arabe is around a thousand years old. It was the summer home of Granada's emirs, and still plays host to cultural happenings in the summer. A winding path leads directly to the beach.

Close by, the Museo Historico and Iglesia de Nuestra del Rosario, with its 16th century lintel, call for closer inspection. The museum is filled with antiquities, some dating back to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. You can also see a miniature of the castle along with artwork and vintage photographs.

Sculpture and caves

Beneath the rugged cliffs, semi-tropical fruit orchards and sugar cane flourish on the shoreline. Close by, the village of La Caleta is home to Europe's single remaining sugar factory. Kitty Hari's Sculpture Garden isn't far away, either.

Why not take a trip to the Sierras de Tejeda Nature Reserve? Rocky canyons, forests and cave systems are overflowing with flora and fauna, just minutes from your holiday home. Visit the Cave La Fajara, and the narrow Los Cahorros canyons, cut by the Chillar River. As you hike, bike or horseback through this wilderness, you might just spot a king eagle souring overhead.
