One of the Costa Blanca's most foodie-friendly resort towns, Santa Pola is rich in flavoursome cuisine. Many of its superb restaurants source their ingredients at its enormous food market, which takes place on Saturdays and Mondays in the main square. Visit and have a go at haggling with the friendly vendors. To refuel after a day of exploring, head to one of the superb wine bars selling traditional tapas. 'Tapas' means 'top' in Spanish, referring to whatever was cooking on top of the pots at the roadside inns traditionally frequented by passing farmers. In Santa Pola and across Spain, tapas is still the centrepiece of a memorable evening out with friends and family.

Cultural delights

Don't miss out on the Castillo Fortaleza de Santa Pola, located in the centre of town. This spectacular fortress is an imposing feature of the city skyline and an interesting place to learn about the history of the area. A little off the beaten path but equally worth a visit are the Iron Age cave drawings at Cueva de las Aranas. Bring a torch and marvel at these drawings that appear exactly as they did when they were originally made, long ago.

This park has ecological value as a micro reserve for nesting birds, and as its name suggests, 19th-century salt mines define the landscape. Playa de Levante
