An Itinerary for the Perfect Road Trip in Germany
Germany has a number of defined routes - the Romantic Road, the Fairy Tale Road and the Wine Road are a few examples. You choose your route according to your interests and preferences; the route described below is the Romantic Road - a scenic 350 km drive through Bavaria. The following is a summary of extraordinary locations you will experience along the way:
-
Wurzburg
Wurzburg is not far from Frankfurt, so hiring a car is relatively simple. Spend a day in this city. Enjoy the Marienberg Fortress on the hill, with great views of the city. Visit Residenz Palace which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site as one of the leading Baroque palaces in Europe. Wurzburg is the capital of the Franconian Wine Region, so it's worth making time to do some wine tasting.
-
Rothenburg Op Den Tauber
Rothenburg is only 45 minutes from Wurzburg. It is a very popular destination, visited by over 2 million people each year. The village is expensive, but is full of character, very quaint and rather magical when the lights go on after dark.
-
Dinkelsbuhl
Dinkelsbuhl suffered no damage during World War II, and has thus retained its original medieval architecture. It is the epitome of what one might imagine a true German town would look like. It was once a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire. The buildings are colourful, and the streets cobbled, providing a festive atmosphere.
-
Nordlingen
Nordlingen is situated in the centre of a crater created by the impact of a meteor. This is the only place in Germany where you will be able to walk the entire length of the town's walls and battlements. The local Gothic cathedral's dome provides a magnificent view of the surrounds.
-
Augsburg, on to Fussen
Augsberg was founded in 15 BC, and has many historical attractions. Despite it being one of the largest cities in Bavaria, it doesn't take much time to explore. Once you are done, make your way to the end of the Romantic Road: Fussen. Just outside Fussen is the famous Neuschwanstein Castle - a very popular attraction. Allow about four hours to explore the castle, and then enjoy the picturesque small towns in the area. Frankfurt is close to Fussen and provides a convenient drop-off point if you've hired a car.
