Summer holidays in Costa Rica are all about surfing on shimmering waters and zip lining through verdant canopies. Brightly billed toucans and capuchin monkeys haunt the trees, while bird-sized blue morpho butterflies float through the sun beams. Wander through forests festooned with orchids and swim at crater lakes, shrouded in mist.
Costa Rica's waterfalls are famous, and well worth hiking to. Viento Fresco is one of the best known, falling for 75 metres into a pool that's perfect for a refreshing dip before continuing your hike. Don't miss La Paz Waterfall Gardens, where five miles of trails are inhabited by flitting butterflies and jaguars.
Thailand's beaches have a legendary status among the world's summer holiday destinations. The luxury of Phuket and the party atmosphere of Ko Pha Ngan are yours to enjoy. Kitesurf or paddleboard in the warm water off Koh Samui, and plunge into the sapphire sea surrounding the Phi Phi Islands. Come to Krabi's remarkable emerald cliffs, which punctuate the serene sands of Railay. They're only accessible by boat, which only contributes to their otherworldly aura.
