Key Information for a Ski Holiday in Ischgl

Key Information for a Ski Holiday in Ischgl

With so many Alpine ski resorts to think about, skiing holidays in Ischgl are far from the only option. At HometoGo, we're huge fans of the resort, but we do recommend getting to know what it has to offer before you book accommodation and flights. With that in mind, here are some key bits of information to know before making the all-important vacation decision.

  1. Ischgl's ski season compares with the best.

While many Alpine resorts in France and Switzerland struggle to function beyond April, that's rarely a problem in Ischgl. Thanks partly to its 1.7-mile (2,700-metre) elevation, the resort usually opens from November to May, with dependable ski conditions for 6 months of the year.

  2. There are slopes for everyone.

Another thing to know about Ischgl is that it's a good destination for all ability levels. There are 150 miles (241 kilometres) or more of slopes in the surrounding region, and the resort itself ranges from the epic 8-mile (12.9-kilometre) long black run on Route Eleven to much more sedate runs from close to the Swiss frontier, which were once used to smuggle contraband. All enjoy great cable car links (and high-speed zip lines are also available for rapid descents to the town below).

  3. Culture mixes with pure Alpine enjoyment.

Ischgl isn't just about adrenaline rushes. It also has a more sophisticated side, especially around the start and end of the skiing season. If you visit in November or April and May, expect mountaintop concerts with major label artists. You can anticipate performances throughout the season from DJs, jazz artists, and even classical ensembles.

  4. The gastronomy is first-class.

Dining out is another big plus point at Ischgl. For starters, there are traditional Tirolese inns, where you can try some Paznaun cheese. Trattorias show off the region's close links to Italy, and there are cafes to pick up a pitch-perfect Apfelstrudel in between descents as well as bars where cocktails match up with anything available in Vienna.

  5. For apres-ski, it's a good place to be.

Ischgl isn't purely marketed at party-goers, but it delivers for nightlife fans. In fact, one of its strap-lines is "the Ibiza of the Alps", so you can be confident of finding a buzzing club whenever the temptation arises. But it's important to note that there are family attractions as well, including performances at Showarena and cinemas with the latest releases. So, it's not just for ravers!
