Monasteries and museums
Visit the Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni, which is without doubt the most important religious building on the island. Positioned on the hill over the town of Frini, the monastery offers spectacular views of the northern side of the island and the mainland. St. Frini is the patron saint of Monastery of Lefkada.
According to local lore the monastery was built in 1634 on the site of a previous temple consecrated for Artemis, the goddess of hunting. The monastery was renovated in the 18th century, reflecting the influence of the Venetian naval forces. Today you can see Byzantine icons, old manuscripts and gospels in the monastery's museum collection.
Three kilometres from Lefkada Town, the idyllic beach of Agios Ioannis unfurls before you. The rollers that wash in make the beach ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing. If you are after more tranquil waters, head a little further away to Kathisma, a lengthy beach with shallow water and sugar soft sand.
Watersport and leisure centres line Nidri Beach, which is without doubt the best organised on the island. There are a number of excellent tavernas serving fresh fish and seafood.
Folklore and festivals
The International Folklore Festival of Lafkada takes place annually in the first week of August and includes a parade and other performances by talented dance groups. The festival aims to reconnect modern people with common traditions.
Another August festival worth a visit is Karia, a recreation of a traditional wedding. During the day the bride is decorated and a colourful procession through the streets follows.
