A city of castles, bridges, and dragons where most of the top sights are concentrated in a historic, compact centre, city breaks in Ljubljana have much to offer in a 48-hour period.
1. Ljubljana Castle
This 12th-century fortress is perched high on the hill in the centre of the city and is accessed by a funicular train. Today it features interactive museum displays, an escape room, a restaurant, and even a nightclub.
2. The Ljubljana Dragon
Legend has it that Jason and his Argonauts founded the city when they slayed a dragon who resided at the source of the Ljubljanica River. Today the dragon is the city's protector and symbol, which you'll find depicted all over Ljubljana, most notably at Dragon Bridge.
3. Triple Bridge
This three-way bridge was designed by the renowned architect Jose Plečnik, who designed much of the 19th-century development of the city. As well as this stunning bridge, take a visit to Plečnik House to find out more about this historic figure and his significance to Ljubljana.
4. Ljubljana Cathedral
Officially named St Nicolas Church, this baroque cathedral is one of the most ornate and artistic churches in Slovenia. The walls are adorned with 18th-century frescoes whilst the door features a 20th-century wood relief carved by Tone Demar, depicting the history of Slovenia.
5. Ljubljana Old Town
The oldest part of the city is home to many buildings of historical and aesthetic significance, such as the pink Franciscan Church in Preernov trg Square and the Town Hall. Enjoy a drink at one of the many cafes along the Petkovek Embankment, where you can soak up the city's youthful vigour.
