A city is not what most people think of for a cycling holiday, but Amsterdam has 250mi. of dedicated cycle paths. Head past canals, interesting architecture, and quaint cafes as you explore the city. This is a wonderful idea for a weekend break, as you can easily see the highlights of the city from a bike, and you can certainly hire a bicycle if you don't want to bring your own.
The official start of the Tour de France is now in Utrecht. This first day is a nine-mile high-speed dash just outside the city. You might not hit the same speeds the racers do, but at least you can ride the same route as all those famous cyclists. The surrounding countryside is stunning, and after your sprint, you can take the time to explore the bike-friendly city of Utrecht.
Wonder along the 400mi. coastal bike path where the Rhine, Scheldt, and Meuse rivers all meet. There are plenty of small villages, such as Cadzand and Westkapelle, to stay in and explore along the route. Ride the route in summer if you want to enjoy the beaches.
