As Norway's capital city, Oslo is the perfect starting point for a road trip. Flying into Oslo means you've got plenty of choices when renting a car, and can shop around to find the best price. Don't hit the road right away though - make sure to stay in Oslo for a few nights to experience everything the city has to offer. Check out the Norwegian Maritime Museum on the banks of the Bygdøy peninsula, which offers workshops for children and film screenings, as well as a variety of interesting exhibits. Oslo also has a lively cultural scene, with art galleries, food halls, and trendy bars galore.
Situated just a short drive from Oslo is the city of Drammen, which sits on the banks of its namesake river. In Drammen's northern countryside stands Kjøsterudjuvet, a stunning 1,300-metre long natural gorge which makes for a fantastic hiking trail. If you're visiting during summer it's even possible to walk through the gorge along the riverbed, so pack your sturdiest walking shoes! Once you've tired yourself out, consider checking out Galleri Athene on the south bank of the Drammen River, one of the biggest private art galleries in Norway.
Drive just 3 hours on from Drammen, and you'll find yourself at the border of the largest national park in Norway. With opportunities for hiking, fishing, climbing, and skiing, there's something for every type of explorer here. It's also a great destination for wildlife enthusiasts, and is home to a vast array of arctic plants and animals, including some of the largest wild reindeer herds in the world. Consider packing your bike too - the park offers some of the most beautiful cycle routes in all of Norway.
Just a 2.5-hour drive from Hardangervidda National Park stands the city of Bergen on Norway's southwestern coast. The second-largest city in Norway, Bergen is described as the 'gateway to the fjords of Norway', and is brimming with charm and culture. The city is surrounded by 7 mountains, and offers endless possibilities to explore Norway's stunning natural countryside. In the centre of the city, consider visiting Bergen's famous fish market, which sells fresh seafood, fruit, and vegetables. There is also a wide variety of fish restaurants to choose from, where you can sample the best of fresh Norwegian cuisine.
