Matlock, and the neighbouring Matlock Bath are among the busiest of the Peak District towns with plenty of shopping and restaurants. Worth a visit is the Heights of Abraham in Matlock Bath. Take the cable car up to the top of the cliffs for the opportunity to explore caves, learn about the natural history of the area or just to have a coffee with panoramic views in the café.
Bakewell is famous world-over for its pudding, a rich, sweet pastry pie filled with strawberry jam and almond paste. Pick one up at any bakery in town to eat right away, or enjoy later. Just outside Bakewell is the spectacular Chatsworth House, one of England's finest stately homes. Set aside a full day to explore the interiors of the house and the vast parkland estate with formal gardens, country walks, and a children's farmyard.
Glossop is the ideal destination for hillwalkers, lying close to the most rugged moorland areas of the Peak District. The town also has interesting old mill buildings in the centre, and plentiful shopping opportunities.
