Many of Portugal's most exclusive clubs have a twilight rate, usually half the full rate for 18 holes.Twilight hours start in late afternoon, usually around 3.30pm, and you are allowed to play as long as you can, daylight permitting. Twilight golf means you are not playing at the hottest time of the day and you have your mornings free for sightseeing or hitting the beach.
Most golfers make a bee-line for the famous courses of the Algarve but there is just as good golfing on the coast near the capital, Lisbon. Several golf resorts such as the Pestana Resort near Sintra offer discounts on green fees to residents, so check for special deals and promotions before booking accommodation.
One of Portugal's best coastal links courses is Estela Golf, north of Porto. This is a true hidden gem which most visitors don't get to experience, at prices far less than the famous clubs further south. Book two or more rounds for a discount on fees.
