Description

This attractive terraced cottage, a former blacksmiths cottage is situated on a quiet lane, just a short walk from the centre of the ancient market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland. This delightful old cottage provides an ideal base for exploring the Lakeland fells, with miles of pathways to discover, and with the added benefit of all the towns excellent amenities on the doorstep. Warm and cosy throughout, this charming cottage is most welcoming with a well laid-out sitting room with original ceiling beam, a leather suite and access through to a well-equipped kitchen/diner. The kitchen then leads out to a raised patio area and above that is a very pretty garden; a tranquil and elegant spot to soak up the sun, read a good book and enjoy your favourite tipple. The two bedrooms are pleasantly furnished and styled and a good-sized bathroom ensures that guests have all they could ask for in this lovely Lakeland cottage. This holiday home is a short walk to the main high street, Boroughgate, which is described as being one of the finest in England, and its also only a short walk to the river where you can walk past the cricket ground and out along the river bank where friendly ducks and even an occasional elusive otter can be sighted. Spend time exploring the magnificent countryside or take a trip on the famous Settle-Carlisle railway line and visit the likes of Settle and Skipton to take in the Yorkshire countryside before crossing the famous Ribblehead Viaduct. To the west of Appleby is the Lake District whose northern and central lakes are within easy reach, and to the east lie the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With the Yorkshire Dales, Hadrian's Wall and the Scottish Borders all within easy reach makes any holiday in this wonderful area a memorable one.
The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland is situated on a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the Pennine range. The town offers shops and pubs, along with a Norman Castle, a medieval Church and a horse fair in June. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, and within reach are both the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks.

‘Blacksmith Cottage was nicely furnished and the bottle of wine waiting for us on arrival was a friendly touch. Its location next to the fish and chip shop and a few yards from the centre of the village was ideal. The bed was comfortable and the accommodation was very quiet - the chip shop is only open 4 or 5 days a week and closes by 7 at the latest. There was no-one in the upstairs rental so I don't know whether you might be disturbed by people walking around overhead. The owners had left basic essentials, e. g. washing powder, kitchen roll, toilet roll, plasters (v. useful one evening). The only downside was that it was a bit cramped. The bed took up a lot of the living/bedroom and if one partner gets up a lot earlier than the other, there isn't anywhere very comfortable to sit and read the paper etc.’

‘We stayed for a week to do some walking in the area. The weather was pretty poor but the house was well equipped and comfortable. It was great to have such a cosy place to warm up and dry out! The covered area to the rear was especially useful for cleaning our boots and the owner helpfully supplied a bucket. We ate out in the evenings (after all it is a holiday) but there are few places to do so on foot. The Turton Arms and the Ashiana are in the village centre and both are good, the other pubs don't do food. The Royal Oak is good but it's a ten minute walk uphill.’

‘This cottage was homely enough to feel like we'd moved home temporarily, and were living amongst locals like the owners next door rather than being in a group of holiday properties. We liked being in the centre of the town, and were pleased to be part of Appleby's economic revival after the winter flood damage. The decoration, style and furnishings were clean, smart and comfortable.’

‘The cottage was well-equipped, warm and comfortable during a period of awful weather. It was centrally placed for the town's amenities. The owners were friendly and helpful. We would visit again in hopefully better weather. We enjoyed some local walks and the local shops and pubs, and always looked forward to returning to the cottage. It was particularly nice to be able to have our dog with us. In better weather the lovely garden would have well-used.’

‘Had a really wonderful week in this quaint cottage. I was very impressed by the quality of the interior, it was tastefully decorated with nice period furnishings. I felt completely at home as soon as I arrived. The whole place was clean and fresh. The owner has paid great attention to detail and it pays off marvelously. The bottle of wine is a lovely touch and reinforces the owners' desire to ensure you have a good time. The cottage is well placed for the town's amenities as it is just off the main square. There are three nice pub/restaurants within a hundred yards and a few yards further on there is a convenience store and a newsagent as well as gift shops etc. This was my first cottage holiday and it is going to be very difficult to better the experience - Thank you’

‘In a very central position in Grassington. The studio is small and very well equipped, although may have too much furniture and unnecessary ornaments. The bathroom was a little chilly. On arrival, the remote control for TV was missing. We contacted the owner who suggested we look under the be bed! She contacted us later to say the previous tenant had taken it home with her. No replacement was offered. As we were only there for 3 nights it never appeared.’

‘This is an absolutely delightful studio set right in the heart of Grassington. I booked it as a Christmas present for my husband and we both had a great time. We stayed there in a week when the temperatures were below zero and snow lay on the ground. It was very comfortable and cosy. There is one room with a large bed and a couple of sofas and chairs. The kitchen and dining table are around the corner. It is extremely well stocked. All the usuals but also books, DVDs, guides as well as tea and coffee. Even a bottle of wine! The location is ideal. At that time of year we were able to park the car in the square. Within a few yards were three pubs, a hotel with restaurant, an indian take-away and a fish and chip shop. We ate at all of them! We also bought cakes from the cafe opposite the cottage. They were all good. We also visited the Old Hall Inn at Threshfield (perfect for fish and chips) and had the tasting menu at The Angel at Hetton. Lovely flat in a great village. Would highly recommend.’

‘We stayed in this little cottage in Aug/Sept 2014 and found it to be very charming and well equipped. The location is fabulous for lots of walking in the Yorkshire Dales and Grassington is a lovely place to be based as it is a lovely friendly village. There are three hotels that allow dogs and the food is acceptable pub food. If there was one downside, I would struggle to find one but it would be that it is a studio and quite small. However, the layout is very well done and there is a huge bed.’

‘We live relatively close by and as I work from home wanted to relax and be away from my working/home environment. Staying at blacksmith cottage made me think why do we need big houses and lots of clutter that we never use. It was compact, very well equipped, extremely clean and we were welcomed by a lovely bottle of wine. The weather was kind to us and we did what we planned to do...absolutely nothing. It was wonderful and I would highly recommend a stay here. Perhaps next time we will try lotties loft upstairs!’

‘We chose this rental on the basis of the favourable reviews, and expected slightly better than we got. It was fine in terms of size, and very convenient for the village. But there were too many things not working or in need of repair - we called the owner who retuned the TV for us and replaced the five light bulbs that were not working. But the radio was hopeless, there was broken shelf in the fridge and the fitted sheets didn't fit the bed. So it would benefit from a bit of a health check and improvement before the season really gets going.’

‘This studio apartment is compact, very clean but with too much space taken up by furniture and knick knacks. However the kitchen was very well equipped and stocked and the bed huge and comfortable and the bathroom clean and well presented. The sitting out area was very disappointing, full of weeds and garden furniture dirty and unusable which was a shame as we were there for one of the rare warm dry spells. It is ideally situated for the village and for walking the dales. Parking to unload and load vehicle can be difficult.’

‘Fantastic instructions re arrival. The cottage was a large studio with en suite, but very cosy and sweet. We used it as a base for our walking holiday, but it was lovely to come back to in the evening. The cottage is in the centre of Grassington and ideally placed to stroll home from one of the many pubs and restaurants. Grassington also has a small supermarket, bakers (great first thing in the morning to stock up with drinks and sandwiches before our walk) and numerous delightful gift shops. The only slight problem was that the cottage was on a narrow hill and it was very difficult to get the car down. As there was no parking, the car had to be parked elsewhere and you had to walk to the cottage. I could see this would be a problem to anyone who had difficulty in walking too far. Overall an excellent place to stay and very dog friendly.’
