Description

SummerHouse is a wonderful holiday let for 14, nestled in extensive grounds in picturesque Somerset countryside, overlooking the stunning Mendip foothills in the Chew Valley.

Exclusively yours, this magnificent private estate comprises a lovingly restored stables and a granary - Old Stables, sleeping eight, and East Wing, sleeping six. Originally built in 1800 as part of the Belluton Grange estate to serve the nearby villages, nowadays they are full of comfy rooms, and offer unique and memorable stays for large groups.

The old barn, meanwhile, has been turned into a spa with heated swimming pool, hot tub, steam shower and changing rooms. Indulge in the range of activities on hand. Or kick back and relax! This is available for your sole use between 8.00 - 20.00.

Old Stables and East Wing are adjacent to each other, being connected by a shared laundry room between them.

Located in ten acres of beautiful grounds with a panorama of the Mendips as your morning view, on a short walk, you will encounter the eponymous summerhouse, as well as Georgian features including a well and a rare Horse Wash, utilising a natural spring.

Old Stables comprises accommodation for eight over four bedrooms. Retaining its original character, it benefits from two reception rooms: The Garden Room/Conservatory has a large dining table seating up to 14 guests and magnificent views of the iconic Pensford viaduct, straddling the Chew Valley, that speaks of the heyday of train travel. The spacious sitting room has comfortable seating and a wood burner. A fully equipped open plan breakfasting kitchen is next to the living area. All of these rooms have French doors that lead onto the garden.

Upstairs are three len-suite bedrooms, two with super king beds that can be made up as twins if required, and the third with a 5 ' king. Two have bathrooms with freestanding baths and separate showers., one has a shower room. The fourth bedroom is located downstairs and has full size bunk-beds and access to a downstairs washroom.

East Wing (the show-off little sister), provides ground floor accommodation for six over three beautiful en suite bedrooms. Its spacious sitting/dining room has ceiling-to-floor windows, and a magnificent fireplace with a cosy wood burner. There is an HDTV with a Wii, Android TV box and a Blu-Ray player. A bank of skylights stream natural light into the room making it nice and bright. Just off the living room, there is a modern kitchen with an electric oven, gas hob, built-in microwave, and a slimline dishwasher.

Opposite the front door and entrance hall is Wisteria, a super king/twin bedroom with a TV and en suite walk-in shower. Just off the living room are two further en suite bedrooms: Willow has a super king bed (can convert to twins), TV and en suite bathroom with a freestanding slipper bath and walk-in shower; Magnolia, has a comfortable 5' bed, TV, and en suite with bath and overhead shower.

Discover the purpose built spa complex housing a ten-metre pool, hot tub, changing rooms and steam cubicle.

Outside SummerHouse, a private terrace has ample seating for your party, with loungers, comfy chairs and a charcoal barbecue. There is also a private patio with charcoal barbecue at the foot of the driveway. The garden itself is shared by guests and owners alike.

There's plenty to keep you on site and lots of reasons to venture out into the beautiful Somerset countryside! SummerHouse is situated in Belluton, a hamlet on the B3130, which was mentioned in the Domesday Book, and nearby Pensford has a wealth of history too.

SummerHouse is within easy access to the A37 for travelling to the Georgian city of Bath and the home of Isambard Kingdom Brunel: Bristol. Both cities can be reached within 30 minutes.

SummerHouse is also ideally situated for visiting the historic City of Wells, England's smallest city, with its ancient Cathedral, Bishop's Palace and lovely market square with its twice weekly market.

Within easy reach are the impressive gorge and caves of Cheddar and Wookey Hole, historic Glastonbury, and the new designer outlet at Kilver Court.

Chew Valley is unique in the West Country, comprising some 35,000 acres of unspoilt and protected countryside which occupies the middle ground of the Bath, Bristol and Wells triangle. Dominating the south side of the valley are the foothills of the Mendip Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The valley contains both the Chew Valley and Blagdon Lakes, notably for their fishing, birdlife, sailing and nature study amenities. The villages in the Valley are all unspoilt and each has its individual charm and character.

There are several walks from the front door, including a stiff climb up to the Iron Age Hill fort atop Norton Malreward or a meander along the Chew Valley to see the Stanton Drew Standing Stones.

There is great food to be found at The Rising Sun in Pensford and 'the Pelly', The Lazy Lobster and The Bear and Swan in Chew Magna. If you are looking for gourmet dining, look no further than The Pig near Bath, four miles distant. Please note, you will need to make a reservation for The Pig well in advance.

SummerHouse provides perfect group accommodation for guests attending weddings at The Pig near Bath, a nine minute taxi drive away. Weddings at Folly Farm, and Ston Easton Park can be reached within 11-15 minutes' drive.

The cottages at SummerHouse are also available to rent separately for smaller groups - Old Stables (sleeps 8) and East Wing (sleeps 6).

Old Stables

‘I booked both sides of the Old Stables for a family gathering in the week before Christmas 2022. Our joining instructions did not come through by email until after we had left home and on arrival had no idea how to access the house via the coded keypad. This was resolved by an exchange of mobile phone messages. Our family members joined us later in the day and were very excited by the beautiful bedrooms and bathrooms. However it soon became apparent the central heating was not working and on one of the coldest days of the year it quickly became uncomfortable. We had to rely on the wood burner in the lounge and one electric radiator with which we used to heat the adjoining children's bedrooms. A good point was the free access to the wood store for logs without additional charge which is common in other properties. Although the central heating was reset it kept tripping out and became quite a distraction for the first 3 days. Communication with the owners - who lived adjacent to the Old Stables - was mostly by text and email. We were able to deduce the central heating system was programmed on a timer and we could be somewhat proactive in monitoring the control station and flue discharge to identify if the boiler had tripped before it became cold inside. To their credit the owners instituted a regular watch on the boiler to be able to reset when it cut out, called out a plumber and we had a visit from the owner on day three to apologise and pass us some home made fudge in a gesture of compensation....... For the second half of our week the heating and hot water was no longer an issue. We very much enjoyed the spa facility. The pool and hot tub were very warming! Although the steam room facility in the shower did not work. Similarly the garden room is splendid with marvellous views across the valley. Spectacular at sunset. I have mentioned above the property was a bit tired and lacked some basic maintenance. The double doors to the terrace from the kitchen stuck and were difficult to open and close - there were no screws in the top hinge to the door frame. A double wall socket was loose in the kitchen. The open fire in the single storey section was impossible to get going without the room filling with smoke. A cracked shower tray in one of the single storey section bathrooms. The glass in the lounge wood burner is cracked and loose. Loose cables run along the outside over the terrace. Windows in the garden room leaked with rain coming through over where electric sockets are fitted. The sofas in the lounge are past their best and sunken. These are all easy fixes and I list them in the hope the owners take note to bring the property up to the "luxury" label it is being advertised as. My last gripe is that as this was a luxury property and we had booked for the week before Christmas we had asked for a Christmas tree to be placed in the house but the owners refused so we had to bring our own. On a good note the beds were very comfortable and the bathrooms generally well appointed.’
