Description

Stokesley 7.9 miles. Enjoying spectacular views of the amazing North Yorkshire Moors is this picture-perfect stone cottage, resting on a working hill farm close to the village of Chop Gate, and within the North York Moors National Park. Providing an idyllic retreat for four guests who want to be within natural surroundings and on the doorstep of their outdoor adventure, this homely and reverse-level dwelling is the perfect choice. Wood Cottage, so named because it stands next to the gate leading to the wood, is a lovingly renovated 200 year old barn and makes delightful living accommodation. Once here take in the extraordinary views of Raisdale and Bilsdale before stepping inside to discover the ground floor, home to two bedrooms, including a pretty twin room, and a lovely double bedroom, with king size bed, both with delightful bedding and furnishings to make you feel at home. Also resting on this floor is the bright and spacious bathroom, where a bath with a shower over is housed for you to freshen up in, with a cloakroom next door too for added convenience. Move upstairs to find the heart of the home within the first-floor open-plan living space, where the beautiful fabrics and furnishings have been carefully selected to keep the cottage light and pretty. From here you can take in the fabulous views of the surrounding countryside or relax on the sofa in front of the stove-effect fire. Ensure the group enjoys a hearty meal after a day of walking on the North York Moors by rustling up a fabulous dish in the amply-equipped kitchen, complete with an electric oven and hob, dishwasher and fridge/freezer, with a country-style dining table to sit around and tuck in. Make use of your own patio space and garden outside with seating so you can rest and relax within this divine location, surrounded by magnificent scenery. Enjoy views across the open countryside which includes a field barn, the only one in the area, and the stone-walled fields so typical of the farmland hereabouts. A short walk in any direction provides a site for a picnic; making this the ideal base for a family holiday, romantic break, get together with friends or just the chance to unwind and get away from it all; or put on your walking boots and begin discovering the expansive North Yorkshire Moors in all their heather-clad beauty, where many routes coincide, as well as the 110-mile long Cleveland Way running close by. Enjoy fabulous countryside leading through woodland, fields, hills and dales over towards the Wainstones and beyond. Chop Gate, 1/2 a mile from Wood Cottage, offers a pub that serves local food. For guests willing to travel a little further, the village of Great Broughton is 4 miles away and offers several local pubs with restaurants and just 7 miles away is the market town of Stokesley with a traditional high street, a weekly market and monthly farmers market. There is also an excellent leisure centre with swimming pool and gym, and a 9-hole golf course, driving range and crazy golf. Travelling from Wood Cottage in the opposite direction brings you to the picturesque market town of Helmsley in the Ryedale area. You can stroll around the market and grab coffee or lunch in one of the many cafes, or hotels and even try out the local ice-cream and handmade chocolates or visit the stick man who made Nanny McPhee's magic walking stick. Discover the delightful village of Great Ayton, or head over to Whitby where a host of seaside attractions await as well as a beautiful beach, with the fabulous Whitby Abbey overlooking the town and reached via the challenging 199 Steps, perhaps travelling here by steam train from Pickering, 45 minutes drive away from Wood Cottage, with the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway. Other nearby attractions include many National Trust properties, Captain Cook's monument, Roseberry Topping, Flamingo Land, Castle Howard and the historic city of York. Note: This property can be booked with Ref. 1126877, together sleeping six guests.
Stokesley sits in the county of North Yorkshire and is settled around the River Leven. This small market town is a hub of activity with a selection shops and ample choice of pubs and restaurants to delight in, alongside a local leisure centre and golf club. Settled between the edge of the North York Moors and the lively, large town of Middlesbrough, you can find a wealth of things to do whether that's exploring the countryside with walks or bike rides to see the amazing scenery, or visiting the coast and discovering some beautiful beaches.

‘The house itself is really nice - well appointed, good sized and comfortable bedrooms, plenty of space in the kitchen/diner/sitting room and lounge downstairs. What we found really exceptional about the property though was the location - it's on its own in the middle of a large farm with countryside views all around. As a bonus there's a really good hottub where you can relax and take in the surroundings. A perfect place to enjoy a break with a large group.’

‘We have just returned from wood cottage we are very disappointed. The cottage looks nice but a lot of things let it down the bathroom is full of mould and needs updating. The sofa if you could call it that is small old shabby and uncomfortable. we were told plenty of towels would be available but one bath towels and one hand towel each was not enough as we were there for a full week there is no washing machine so we could not wash them. The stairs are slippy that lead up to the main living area if you are bad on your feet/legs you will find it hard to get up and down them. On a positive note a welcome pack of bread butter milk wine and flowers were left which is a nice touch but we were let down by the things we have mentioned. We do not complain about the places we stay in but on paper this sounds ideal but just not for us. The cottage is situated on the edge of the main village which is ideal for shopping eating out and take aways hope this information is useful.’

‘Stayed here on a fri - sun break for my daughters 40th birthday. There were 6 adults and 4 children in the party. We wished we could have stayed longer! The cottage is very big and comfortably furnished. A HUGE well equipped kitchen, diner, sitting area with doors opening to both front and back gardens. There is a cosy sitting room with plenty of seating and a beautiful brick fireplace with an electric log burner effect fire which was very cosy. The heating and hot water were perfect. There is a downstairs cloakroom and a further 2 bathrooms and an en suite upstairs. The bedrooms are all large and the beds very comfortable. Outside there is a hot tub, table and chairs and bbq. There are stunning views all around. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return. Please do note that you will have to drive through the actual farmyard to get to the cottage - we thought we'd got it wrong and were driving on private property! Excellent place - well worth a visit.’

‘We stayed at Wood Cottage for two nights as a family of 9 (3 generations aged 16months - 50's). The dealings I had with the owners prior to and during our stay were excellent, always able to answer questions and make suggestions. The house itself is beautiful. Immaculately clean, very good selection of items in the kitchen and generally all you'd need for your stay. The beds were comfortable and the rooms spacious. Showers were powerful and warm. The house was so cosy and warm. We loved that in both of the downstairs rooms there was plenty of seating to accommodate everyone. The garden was lovely and fully enclosed which was great for the dog and toddler. Our weekend was on the whole rainy, but this didn't matter as the views from the house are stunning and you can sit in one of the downstairs rooms playing games / relaxing with family and just enjoy the views. When the rain did stop we went into Tenbury Wells and also walked down into the farm where the house is located. My little boy LOVED this. Puddles, sheep, cows, ducks, a dog, tractors and a friendly farmer, what more could a 16 month old little boy want! We had a Chinese takeaway one night from Tenbury Wells, we found a leaflet in the information pile in the house. There are plenty of amenities in Tenbury Wells which is only 10 minute drive away. A fabulous weekend with family in a beautiful house. Next time we'd stay another night. Thank you!’

‘We stayed here for three nights for my husband's birthday. We had a lovely time! The photos online don't do it justice as each room is beautiful and the views are amazing. We went for walks in the countryside and enjoyed eating, drinking and playing games around the huge dinning table. The owner was very friendly and helpful. We will definitely be coming back again.’

‘Well set out cottage - nice welcome package on arrival - flowers, wine, bread & biscuits. Bedroom very warm in June (summer duvet would be appreciated - bedroom downstairs - not a good ideal for windows to be open at night - due to the location of the cottage). Parking not off road as advertised - street parking was the only parking available. Bed comfortable - but due to size of bedroom unable to get out one side. Shower curtain mouldy, wet room compact but easy to use.’

‘I have already sent in a review for Wood Cottage 4 weeks after we returned. The only problem we had was my wife has difficulty with stairs. As there was no rail to hold on to this was quite difficult for her. I feel this should be mentioned in case visitors also have a problem with stairs. Other than that we enjoyed our stay.’

‘The cottage was lovely, very welcoming and homely. The extras in the cottage were very much appreciated - butter, bread, milk, tea. Some sauces, spices and rice were also left in the cupboards from the previous tenants which was brilliant as it made it easier to cook meals without buying (and wasting) brand new items. The information on various local walks left in the cottage was also great - we had things to do every day and got to see lots of the beautiful Lake District scenery.’
