Description

A very warm welcome to our beautiful unique stay, a much loved property in the popular village of Great Strickland. Well liked by walkers, cyclists and those looking to relax and enjoy a slower pace away from busy life.
Compact but Comfortable, 1 bedroom property. The Haven makes the perfect holiday get away for couples or singles looking to explore the beautiful countryside and nature around us.

Because the stairs are very steep to the bedroom it is suited to younger couples and those with no mobility issues.

The cottage is perfectly situated to see Red Squirrels, Deer, Badgers, Foxes and an array of native birds. Often from the bedroom window.

Only five minutes drive from Ullswater and the Lake District National Park. The cottage enjoys uninterrupted views of the Pennines from the private enclosed garden. Everything about this property has been well thought through to create a relaxed and luxurious feeling.

As it is self-catering, you'll find everything you need for a perfect stay. The kitchen has a fridge, a hob, an oven, a kettle and a microwave.
The cottage is a perfect place to relax and offers a television, upstairs and downstairs and private internet access.

If you would like to eat out, there is a pub in the village called The Strickland Arms, Morland cafe is a quick 2 mile drive, but you can walk if you wish. The George and Dragon is 3 miles away. All serving Great food and drinks in a warm and cosy environment.

There is one bedroom in this cottage which contains a king size bed. (Please note that the stairs leading to the bedroom are very steep, almost like a ships ladder. There is a hand rail and photos on our listing). Because the cottage was built in 1873 there are low beams upstairs in the bedroom.

There is one bathroom, which has a toilet and sink and a walk-in shower.

Linen and towels are all included to make your stay more enjoyable.

House Rules:
- Check-in time is 4pm and check-out is 11am.
- Smoking is not allowed.
- There are on-site parking facilities for one car available at the property.
- Pets are welcome at the property. But please bear in mind the above information about the stairs. 1 or 2 Small/medium dogs fit best in the property. ‘Likes: Clever compact design of cottage. Had everything we needed for a comfortable and relaxing stay. Very clean and well presented. Shower room/bathroom was perfect. Nice space to sit outside in the mini garden, with a fine view across to the North Pennines. Dislikes: Headroom is limited. I knew it, but I still bumped my head a few times. Flies! An inevitable downside to being out in the country where there is livestock around. Perhaps a UV 'zapper' in the kitchen area would be a useful addition. And/or a screen door.’

‘My best mate and I stayed at The Haven with my 2 dogs - dogs were welcome on the advert The place was beautiful and cosy warm inside, really nicely decorated and felt super welcoming. The instructions and advice upon booking were really helpful and we took full advantage! Our booking was specifically for our regular hikes in the lakes, so it was perfect that it was right by a well known walk site and allowed our dogs. Unfortunately upon checking out we discovered that despite dogs being allowed, our hosts didn’t want large dogs which wasn’t specified in their ad. Nor did the want dogs that shed hair - unfortunately my collie is a long haired collie so this was impossible to escape! It was really disappointing to receive complaints @ the end because of dog hair which I couldn’t help & no hoover available! Do not book this place if you’re hiking with collie sized dogs and up or you will get complaints from host. Ideally don’t take dogs! They will be expected to stay outside….’

Like the description states, the stairs are steep, and the ceilings are low so be prepared to bang your head a few times if you are taller than 5ft 7! Plenty of parking space, and the local pub is only a 10 to 15 minute walk away (which is very friendly and allows dogs) - the road isn’t well lit at night so I would recommend a torch!’

‘Likes: There was tea and coffee, and the friendly host was on call for anything we had forgotten, but we didn't bother her. I liked how clean and smart the decor was, the access to the garden and the thoughtful touches e. g. fairy lights and a BBQ. Very airy, and it was great to be able to cook proper meals in a fully equipped kitchen. Pretty setting and friendly neighbours. Wonderful to be able to bring our dog and there were no soft furnishing to worry about. Overall, great to have a freshly decorated place to lay our heads. Dislikes: It is in the notes for the property, but the steep stairs ARE quite a challenge because they are in conjunction with low beams. There isn't a couch or area to relax indoors, so this place works best for those looking to be out walking all day and then going to bed and relaxing there. The pillows, duvet and linen felt slightly budget and uncomfortable. The garden does face the road, which isn't busy, but other reviews mentioned lovely views from the cottage. Floors were a bit sticky from having been mopped with some sort of product which left a residue. I received FAR too many emails from the booking agency which meant it was hard to keep track of all the info I needed to find the instructions for the place. Also, I recently saw a note about an additional cleaning fee, which wasn't included in the price. This has not yet been charged but I am wondering about this! Getting info on local places to eat and see wasn't as easy as I would have liked. There is an info sheet in the house but it wasn't up to date.’

‘Likes: We absolutely loved the little cottage, we were greeted but the owners when we arrived, they left us a little treat for our stay. It was quiet, warm and clean. It advertised you could take a dog, there was no signs of a dog being their previously. The kitchen had all the utensils you’d need and everything worked as it should. The bed upstairs was to die for, large, warm and extremely comfy. The bathroom was spacious with a lovely warm shower! Our dog loved the little garden out the back, it was secure and provided a lovely view to look at in the mornings. The cottage provided enough space, with out it feeling to cramp or too big. We will certainly be staying here again! Dislikes: Nothing, it was was spot on’

‘Likes: The cottage was in a perfect location. It was quiet and half a mile from a village pub. Our hosts left a complimentary bottle of wine and a pack of luxury biscuits which was a nice touch. We left the property clean and tidy which they took the time to thank us for. All-in-all it was a relaxing stay. Dislikes: The cottage was built in 1870 so a much smaller ceiling height is expected so I bumped my head before remembering to duck. The hosts fitted a cushion to the beams which was greatly appreciated. The stairs to the bedroom are extremely steep so it wouldn't suit people with mobility issues. This is not criticism but merely to explain to other guests.’

‘Likes: This property is perfectly named. An absolute haven. A perfect get away but with everything on the doorstep. Ideally located, close to Penrith and still feels very rural. Great walking. Pub in walking distance. Everything within a very short drive if you need more. Very well appointed property, beautifully decorated with everything you need. Loads of storage for clothes / food. Fabulous private outdoor area. Exceptionally well appointed kitchen. A property which deserves a lot of respect and not a party pad. Debbie couldn’t have been more helpful or accommodating but also gave total peace and space - the perfect mix. Dislikes: Quite literally nothing we didn’t like. Spotlessly clean, fresh, fabulous bathroom. Perhaps people would prefer a living room or a sofa but we found the living accommodation perfect for our needs. Just outstanding.’

‘Likes: The cottage was really nicely decorated, very clean and the bed was very comfortable. It was easy to find due to the clear instructions despite arriving in the evening. The cosy little garden was perfect for the dogs. Local pub was only a minute drive away with amazing food. The hosts left us a lovely welcome wine and cookies, that was a nice surprise. Dislikes: I think there should be clearly stated that there is no couch in the property, it does make a difference when you arrive from a long walk and have to sit in a kitchen chair.... it would be much nicer to be able to chill out on a couch. Maybe if the hosts provided some tea and coffee that would be nice I assumed there would be some despite being self catering as we had been provided in other properties, I think having to go the shops first thing made me a bit grumpy lol. I do think the stairs can be quite dangerous if you have children or pets having to carry them up and down. I'm not sure what the solution would be for this but the warning doesn't prepare you to how steep they are and if you're tall you'll probably bang your head a few times going in and out of rooms and the house lol. I think it would be useful if we had local leaflets with the local walks and places we could visit. There was not much information on the welcome note. A few leaflets would be very useful so we could get about without trying to Google places aimlessly. A bin in the kitchen for general waste would be very useful and information about recycling and stuff as we didn't know what to do with our rubish.’

‘Incredibly cosy cottage close to the lakes and other lovely areas, beautiful at this time of year too! The decor is nice and the space has everything you need! Debbie was lovely, treats were left for us to enjoy and she recommended local walks and things to do. We definitely recommend Lowther Castle! Secluded garden was great for the dog and had lovely views. The steps to the upstairs are super steep which we knew about, probably closer to a ladder but we managed fine. ‘Likes: All of it. Owner kept us upto date and let us in an hour early, she also left a bottle of wine for us, which was lovely as we were celebrating my partners birthday. The house was immaculate and smelt amazing. Nice and petite, sparkling and chilled. We could sign into our Netflix to watch TV on a night and the bed was one of the comfiest I've ever slept in. ! I could keep going at how lush this place is. A right little hideaway. We are definitely looking forward to booking again. Dislikes: To be honest, there wasn't anything we didn't like. The only real downfall was how far the shops were when we realised we forgot to bring milk for tea, but that wasn't even too bad as we just drove over and caught some scenery on the way.’

The cottage is very tastefully decorated and well equipped and the treats left by Debbie were very thoughtful. (Thank you Debbie) the bed is very comfortable and it has a lovely bathroom. Tall people will need to take care upstairs! The road outside was not busy and it is a very quiet spot. The parking slot is on a steep incline so check your handbrake is working!Didn’t spot a shop in Great Strickland and the pub was unable to accommodate us (sadly that was due to the current covid situation and staff shortages that is affecting everywhere in the Lake District at the moment).
